Kissinger was, in my opinion, unfairly maligned. The Nixon administration did pretty well. Tricky Dick opened up Red China, pursued detente with the Soviets, and found "peace with honor" from the stalemated conflict in Vietnam. Kissinger himself was extraordinarily intelligent and well-read on the topic of foreign relations and diplomatic history (for example, his interesting thoughts about the "Age of Metternich" and the Napoleonic Wars).
The Vietnam War was an honorable fight (although the use of napalm and Agent Orange was totally wrong). After the US withdrew, the Khmer Rouge brutally massacred a quarter of Cambodia's population. America's military interventions keep peace globally.
I agree that the Vietnam War had a purpose, and I've heard it was just taken off track which, given war is hell, is horrific and feels like a profoundly understated way to say that. I think Iraq, Afghanistan, etc. are the same based on the research I've done, they are wars that I am under the impression needed to be fought but have been mishandled now.
Vietnam, Afghanistan, and Iraq are all examples of the same type of warfare: counter-insurgency. The US military is ill-suited for this kind of conflict, that's why those wars failed. I'd strongly recommend this lecture by John Nagl: https://youtu.be/47kJ5XqasOE?feature=shared
Have you read “the boys” graphic novels? I really enjoyed them.
No, but thanks for the suggestion!
It’s brilliant. I’ve got one word for you to sum it up. Herogasm 😂😂😂
